Larry D. Keown -- President

Larry received his undergraduate degree from the University of Montana and graduate degree from the University of Idaho. He began his career with the USDA Forest Service in 1975 holding numerous technical, management, and leadership positions. Larry served many years as a District Ranger, Deputy Forest Supervisor, and Forest Supervisor. His last assignment prior to retiring in 1997 was evaluating numerous case studies around the country on how communities, tribes and federal and state agencies can develop successful and efficient working relationships.
In 1998, Larry founded LDK Associates, LLC a company dedicated to providing educational and consulting services to communities and businesses in the areas of leadership, conflict resolution, intergovernmental working relationships, and strategic planning. His clients have included Federal, state and local governments, chambers of commerce, weed districts, economic development districts, Indian tribes, and businesses. Project experience includes working directly or assisting other agencies on the Medicine Wheel in Wyoming, Bear Butte in South Dakota, Sand Creek in Colorado, and sacred sites in Alabama; tribal strategic planning for EC/EZ grants; compiling historic Indian accounts for an exhibit at the National Historic Trails Center in Wyoming; and preparing and presenting workshops on Indian issues for leadership, diversity, interpretative, and educational purposes.

Larry is able to link personal experiences of his Federal career with academic theories and philosophies. He spent seven years working with a diversity of interest groups, tribes and individuals on the Medicine Wheel in northern Wyoming. This effort culminated in a long-term management plan signed by numerous tribal representatives, state and local governments and federal agencies. This plan is now the foundation and guiding document for managing the Medicine Wheel National Historic Landmark. In addition, Larry serves as President of Friends of the Medicine Wheel, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protection and preservation of the Medicine Wheel sacred site.

In 1999, he began working on a workshop to assist federal, state, local government and business leaders who work, or have a need to work, with Indian tribes and organizations. The objective was to take as much of his and his colleagues' (both Indian and non-Indian) learning experiences and knowledge and package them into a session that would benefit others. Numerous curriculum drafts and reviews over two years resulted in "Building Effective Government and Business Relations With American Indian Tribes."

Associates

Larry has worked extensively on American Indian issues around the country and has numerous Associates representing tribes, organizations, and agencies. As a result of his experiences, he has teamed with many Tribal Associates representing numerous areas of expertise, including tribal social services, health, education, natural resources, government, and culture. Associates selected to instruct workshops are tailored to the individual workshop location and objectives. These Associates assist in providing a high quality workshop that is hands-on and interactive.
